David Van Horn, Summit’s on-site task order manager for Institutional Training Support Services, is a Primary Instructor/Facilitator and Subject Matter Expert for the US Army Armor School’s Cavalry Leaders Course (CLC) at Harmony Church, Fort Moore, Georgia. The demanding three-week course trains officers, warrant officers, and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) from multiple branches and MOSs, who are involved in the planning and execution of reconnaissance collection, and tactical security tasks at the Troop and Squadron level, as well as joint asset planners and operators in support of ground operations. The course provides graduates with the necessary tools and conceptual foundations to focus on applying the fundamentals of reconnaissance and security, as well as established doctrine, in planning large scale combat operations, in time constrained environments. CLC is often referred to as the most intellectually challenging course at the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

In addition to his duties as an instructor, David assists with Program of Instruction (POI) and lesson plan updates for the course, ensuring it aligns with changes in pertinent US Army doctrine, and the constantly evolving operational environment. The course provides Armor officers and NCOs with the “C6” Additional Skill Identifier (ASI), identifying them as Cavalry planning experts. The course conducts 12 resident classes annually, and an additional four Mobile Training Team (MTT) courses at locations around the world. Additionally, CLC is aligned with the Air Cavalry Leaders Course (ACLC) at Fort Novosel, Alabama, to ensure coordination between Army Aviation and ground reconnaissance formations. The course produces around 250 graduates per training year, including Active Army, USAR, ARNG, USMC, and foreign nation officers. Graduates leave with the skills and knowledge to successfully integrate into staff and command positions within Cavalry organizations.
